When do you suggest to start packing for a move?
As soon as you decide to move, you should start clearing out unwanted or unneeded items. The U.S. Department of Transportation has a great moving checklist called “Ready to Move”.
Must everything be packed before the movers show up?
If you want us to pack don’t worry about a thing! If you choose to pack the goods yourself, then you should have everything packed before we show up, otherwise you might end up paying us to wait. Our movers come to your home ready to load the truck, arranging the available pieces much like a puzzle, in order to maximize the capacity and safety of your goods during the move.
Is there an order in which people should pack?
It is best to start packing the items you don’t frequently use, and gradually work towards the more regularly used ones. We even recommend keeping a small box of essentials to travel with you so they are available immediately upon arrival in your new home.
How should bigger furniture be prepared for moving? (Couches/Beds)
If you choose to pack yourself, all bedding should be removed from the beds and packed away before we arrive. We will disassemble the beds ourselves before loading them onto the truck. Other large pieces of furniture can be left as is, and we will pad them for protection before we load them.
How should fragile items be packed to ensure their safety?
Fragile items should be packed either by themselves in their own boxes, or with plenty of white packing paper between them and the other items in the box. Also, you should always start with heavier items on the bottom, working your way up to the lighter items. For a simple test, you can shake the box before sealing it, and if anything moves you know you need more packing.
What boxes/packing material do you recommend using?
We recommend standard size moving boxes and have these available for purchase if requested. The standard sizes, measured in cubic feet, are 1.5 which is good for books, 3.1 which is good for electronics, and 4.5 which is good for linens. For mirrors, pictures, or dishes we recommend cartons which are a heavier grade of cardboard. Clothing can be packed in a wardrobe carton which allows you to hang your clothes up.
Any other packing tips you would like to tell you customers?
You cannot use too much packing paper!
